Commercial Storm Response:After Hail Hits Your Flat Roof

Hail damage on a flat roof rarely looks like much from the ground. It shows up as a leak weeks later, after water has already reached the insulation.

The Tulsa metro saw hail and damaging wind several times in spring 2026.

Why Hail Damage on Flat Roofs Hides

Hail can puncture a membrane, crush the insulation below it, or weaken seams without leaving an obvious hole. Water then works in slowly. By the time a ceiling stain appears, wet insulation may have spread well beyond the original impact.

    TPO

Hail can fracture the membrane or crack it at the seams, especially as the roof ages and the membrane loses flexibility.

    EPDM

Impacts can bruise the rubber and crush the insulation underneath, leaving soft spots that hold water.

    Modified bitumen

Hail knocks granules loose and can fracture the reinforcement inside the sheet, which weakens it over time.

    Metal

Beyond visible dents, hail can damage panel coatings, seams and fasteners, which lets corrosion and water in later.

What to Do in the First 72 Hours

    1

    Make it safe

Keep people out of areas with active leaks, sagging ceilings or wet electrical. Don't walk a damaged roof yourself.

    2

    Photograph inside and out

Take photos of ceiling stains, wet floors, damaged equipment and anything you can safely see outside, including hail on the ground.

    3

Note the date and hail size

Write down when the storm hit and how big the hail was. A coin or ruler in a photo helps.

    4

    Call for an inspection first

Stop active water if you can, but have the roof inspected and documented before permanent repairs are made.

What IGR Roofing Does After a Storm

You own and file the claim with your insurer. We are your roofing contractor, not a public adjuster.

    Inspect

We walk the whole roof, not just the area over the leak.

    Document

Dated photos and measurements of every damaged area.

    Compare

We compare what we find against your Baseline Condition Record if one exists.

    Meet the adjuster

We can meet your adjuster on the roof and walk the damage together.

    Repair

Temporary repairs to protect the building, then permanent repairs with a Plain-Language Scope Sheet.

    Plan members come first

Members of a Preventative Maintenance Agreement get post-storm checks after significant hail, and IGR contacts plan members first. Their Baseline Condition Record is already on file, so damage can be compared against a known starting point.

Local, Before and After the Storm

Out-of-town crews follow the hail and leave when the work dries up. Your roof and its warranty stay behind.
